SU-PSEA Diversity Summit
The Diversity Summit started at 7:00 am on April 16, 2016. Mr. Scott Penner was our first speaker and spoke before Mr. Marvin Worthy. The attendees came to learn about diversity and how to make their classrooms a more inclusive environment. The Summit took place in three parts, each led by Mr. Worthy and included hands on activities. The Summit included the closing ceremony around 4:00 pm. Our post-Summit attendee survey showed that we had equal numbers of freshman and seniors in attendance and all who took the survey responded that they learned at the Summit. Attendees responded that they experienced more ways to include students who feel isolated and who are singled out. Through the variety of exercises, one attendee stated that they started to think more deeply about how students might feel. Attendees also responded that they plan to use icebreakers in the classroom, include diverse activities, try to more deeply understand how their students feel, and how to include students. Two of the most enjoyable parts of the Summit the attendees reported were the hands on activities and the learning that took place.
The SU-PSEA officers who attended learned many things about planning and implementing the Summit. For the officers , this Summit taught us more than diversity. From the planning stage to meeting the morning outside Old Main before we entered the building, many hours were spent working towards this event so that our members could learn more about diversity and could apply what they would hear about. Although each of us will move on to different areas of our lives that include new courses, new schools, or graduation, the officers learned more about planning, collaborating, and preparing our surroundings to assist our speakers and audience.
