Political Action with Chris from NextGenClimate
Shelby introduced our speaker: Chris from NextGenClimate. He is the field organizer for the organization for Shippensburg University and Dickinson College.
This group is a SuperPAC. We can look to see where all their money is coming from, and where it goes. They are running a “grassroots” campaign. They push for candidates that believe in climate change and support renewable energy growth. This is not just about the presidential election, but also the state and local elections.
Our group of voters, the millennials, are the first group of voters to outnumber the baby boomers. Our voices can be heard. He compared the satire in the country to that of Johnathan Swift’s (the first satire created about eating babies to solve the problem of poverty). We are more educated now; we need to look into what we consume.
We can be the change. We can set the example for our generation.
Chris discussed the issue of energy use that was raised during the presidential debate last night. He summarized how the candidates responded. Chris argued that this issue is the most important issue people will be facing the rest of time. We know the facts, the evidence is there that we are going through climate change, we need to use our vote to support candidates who will work towards reducing our effects on the climate.
“Change is inevitable.”
We emphasized the importance of getting all the facts and voting based on an individual’s morals. Our club itself is not endorsing candidates, but we encourage members to vote for people they feel can best fill a position.
We welcomed everyone back for our next meeting October 24th, 2016.
