Benefits of Student PSEA
Brittany started our meeting by picking a raffle ticket. The winning person received a prize. She then discussed the lay out of the club: meeting times, professional development speakers, bonding events, community service, and political action. We reviewed the schedule for the semester.
Brittany discussed apparel, too. We narrowed our options down to a gray half-zip sweatshirt or a long-sleeve shirt. We also have left over shirts from last semester. If anyone is interested in buying one they are $12.
This Thursday we have a community service opportunity at Benjamin Chambers Elementary School at 4:15 pm for packing bookbags for kindergarten registration. Rides are available. Also, there is going to a service project on Saturday at the Southern Region conference.
Emilee then discussed the Southern Region conference. It’s this Saturday from 10am to 4:30 pm. The topic is “How to Manage your Ship”.
Brittany introduced our speaker Dr. Chris Clayton. He is the director of Education Services for Student PSEA. He shared his background in education with us. He then went into our discussion.
Student PSEA is not just insurance! It’s the largest student education association in the country! The Source is the new email platform Student PSEA is using now. Also, the organization is on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter.
As a part of Student PSEA, you are also a part of PSEA. It is 180,000 members strong! We are also a part of NEA, the largest democratic force in the country! So, we have a lot of power. This gives us many membership benefits. Check out www.neamb.com, www.psea.org/mb, and http://psea.inkbenefits.com to find out what benefits you can receive. Also, the “My Deals” app with the login 8875 + Your PSEA ID number gives you access to discounts to a lot of the stores around you. You make money from using your membership!
One of the biggest reasons why to be a member is the mission, vision, values, and goals of PSEA. We promise to teach students to the best of our ability regardless of anything outside of the classroom.
Dr. Clayton then shared stories of when he was a teacher and how PSEA has benefited him. He shared about how Georgia teachers did not organize, therefore they did not have a voice. Being a part of PSEA gives you a voice! As a new teacher, he was accused of inappropriateness with a female student, but PSEA supported him. PSEA will help support us in every situation we may encounter as teachers.
As teachers, parents are entrusting us with their children. We need to be making these kids the best versions of themselves that is possible! This is PSEA’s core value.
The Guiding Principles of Student PSEA include community service; political awareness, action, and advocacy; membership and leadership development; and development as a professional educator. We help you become a better teacher!
The state conference is March 30th -April 1st in Pittsburgh, with 15 development sessions! There is an outreach to teach project at a local school. APEX projects are presented at conference, as well.
Most people join for the insurance, but it’s really about the children. By joining, you are a part of something so much bigger than yourself.
If you want to contact Dr. Clayton, feel free to at [email protected].
To close the meeting we had another raffle drawing in which the winning member received a prize.
We welcomed everyone back for our next meeting February 13th, 2017 at 8pm in Shippen 250.
