Political Action with Mark Keller
Brittany started our meeting. She shared some announcements. We are selling long sleeve t-shirts for $11 this semester. We are going bowling with the Southern Region of Student PSEA on April 21st at 7 pm at East Lanes in Harrisburg. We also discussed the state conference. She then introduced our speaker: Mark Keller. We went around the room and introduced ourselves. He then gave us a little bit of his background. Representative Keller’s wife is a retired school nurse. He discussed some of the most prevalent issues right now. He said he wants teachers to be able to teach, but tests are needed for assessment. Another issue he talked about is how dues from the organization are deducted from teachers’ paychecks. Also, pensions is a big issue right now. Those who are already in the system will not be attacked. We have to make it better somehow so that future educators are not significantly hurt by this.
Mr. Keller shared with us a note from a first-year teacher. The teacher said not to sugar-coat issues. The teacher encouraged us to get involved in our communities; no matter how small we feel, it matters. The best part of being a teacher is the “ah-ha” moment: when we are patient with children, and they finally understand a concept and succeed. We may be the only person a student can rely on. We can be so impactful on a child’s life.
He opened it up to questions then. If we let the teacher teach the students then that is all that matters. Schools are getting big budget cuts. Teachers’ should have to continue-ed, but it should be more accessible. He is proud of students who are involved in their communities/break stereotypes. He likes seeing teacher involvement in these projects, too.
He welcomed us to stop by his office. He thanked us for inviting him to our meeting. He told us to go to his website and sign up for a weekly state news email.
We welcomed everyone back for our next meeting March 6th, 2017 at 8pm in Shippen 250.
